Book cover illustration for a Norwegian novel about two parents and their alienated son.
I wanted to portray the family dynamic with three pine trees: Two pines standing close together, shyly reaching out to a third tree that grows away from them and seems to have a rather twisted, mysterious inner life.
it is a very self-contained, well-crafted text, that made me think of the aloof beauty of a Japanese jewellery box. I tried to capture that, along with the dark and quiet undertone of the story.
The illustration is printed in black ink on a shimmery paper usually used for chocolate boxes.
